My Blood – Ellie Goulding

I know I’ve featured Ms G a lot in the past few months and it might seem a little much to feature her again, but actually IDGAF – it’s my blog and I’ll post if I want to! Thanks to the Artist Radio feature on Spotify, I’ve been rediscovering some of her older tracks and fell in love with this one. There’s something a little more primal about the beat, yet it reminds me of Fleetwood Mac and Florence & The Machine. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking song with some marvellously visceral lyrics.

Favourite lyric: My bones will bleach / My flesh will flee

Wicked Game – James Vincent McMorrow

Like every other GoT fan on the planet I got very excited at seeing the new trailer, but even more so hearing the strains of one of my favourite tunes of all time. This acoustic rendition is gorgeous and his voice lends an ethereal and haunting quality to the lyrics.

Favourite lyrics: World was on fire, no one could save me but you / It’s strange what desire can make foolish people do

When We Were Young – Adele

I wasn’t so keen on this one after hearing Hello but it’s definitely been a grower; if nothing else through sheer persistence hearing it non-stop on every radio station for the past few months, it has left its mark. The Portuguese have a word called saudade and I think this sums it up well; missing the feelings and moments from the past that can never be brought into the present. As a self-confessed catastrophiser, the thought of stopping to take a moment and appreciate the moment in case everything falls to pot is something that appeals to me. Aren’t I the positive nihilist?!

Favourite lyric: Let me photograph you in this light /In case it is the last time / That we might be exactly like we were

Do What U Want – Lady Gaga

I played this non-stop when it was first released but again, with the Artist Radio feature on Spotify, it’s making a return to being overplayed. I like the disconnection of mind, body and soul in the lyrics, that one little piece is retained and can’t be sold to the media or touched by people.

Favourite lyric: You can’t have my heart, and / You won’t use my mind but / Do what you want (with my body)

Love Yourself – Justin Bieber

Look, I never meant to like his music, and I damned well never meant to feature three of his songs on this blog but DAYUM he’s really hit the pop nail on the head. Here’s another track that I didn’t like that much when I first heard it but by Jove it has worked its way into my brain. In the selfie society of today it seems incredibly apt; a cry against the vainglorious of the world. That’s a huge pet peeve and probably deserves a post all of its own!

Favourite lyric: ‘Cause if you like the way you look that much / Oh baby you should go and love yourself.

Dangerous Woman – Ariana Grande
Quite possibly one of the few beings on the planet to look good in a ponytail/half-up do and she does a brilliant impression of Celine Dion. It’s a shame the Lolita schtick is a thing but this catchy ditty is filled with PG-13 ooh la la and who doesn’t like a little naughtiness once in a while?!

Favourite lyric: Somethin’ ’bout you makes me feel like a dangerous woman // Makes me wanna do things that I shouldn’t
